How to Find a Chevening Scholarship: A Complete Guide

The Chevening Scholarship is one of the UK government's most prestigious international awards, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). Every year, it offers fully funded postgraduate study opportunities at UK universities to outstanding emerging leaders from around the world.

What is the Chevening Scholarship?

Chevening is a global fellowship programme that enables talented professionals with leadership potential to become part of an influential global network. Scholars are selected from over 160 countries and territories and typically receive full funding for a one-year Master's degree at any UK university.

Who is Eligible?

To be eligible for a Chevening Scholarship, you must:

  • Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country
  • Return to your home country for at least two years after your award has ended
  • Have at least two years of work experience
  • Apply to three different eligible UK university courses that meet Chevening criteria
  • Have an undergraduate degree that will enable you to gain entry to a postgraduate programme at a UK university

The Application Process

The Chevening application process opens in August each year and closes in November. Applications are submitted online through the Chevening website.

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

Before starting your application, use the Chevening eligibility checker to confirm you qualify. Pay close attention to nationality requirements and work experience thresholds.

Step 2: Choose Your Universities and Courses

You must apply to at least three different UK universities and courses. Research carefully — the course you choose should align with your career goals and the leadership narrative you'll present in your application.

Step 3: Write Compelling Essays

Chevening requires four essays on:

  • Leadership and influence
  • Networking
  • Career plan
  • Why you chose your particular course and universities

Each essay has a strict word limit. Be specific, use real examples, and show how a UK education will help you contribute to your home country.

Step 4: References

You'll need two references from people who know your professional work. Academic references are less preferred — Chevening values professional leadership potential.

Step 5: Interview

If shortlisted, you'll be invited to an interview at the British Embassy or High Commission in your country. Interviews are typically in January–February.

Tips for a Successful Application

  1. Start early — the essays require significant reflection and revision
  2. Be specific about your career goals and how Chevening will help
  3. Demonstrate leadership with concrete examples, not vague claims
  4. Network with Chevening alumni in your country for insider tips
  5. Apply to the right courses — choose programmes that genuinely match your goals

Timeline

  • August: Applications open
  • November: Application deadline
  • January–February: Interviews
  • June: Results announced
  • September/October: Studies begin
